Radiotherapy

All radiotherapy treatments available at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at Villa Maria are performed on an outpatient basis, are non-invasive, painless, and require no special medication. The Center is equipped with one of the most advanced linear accelerators available on the market today, TrueBeam® STx. Moreover at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center at Villa Maria customized positioning and containment systems help immobilize patients and maintain their position during all treatment sessions.

Radiotherapy techniques available at the Center include:

  • Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT):
An advanced radiotherapy technique giving radiation therapist the ability to align the radiation beam on the target area with more precision and accuracy, particularly in critical situations such as tumors close to the spinal cord, heart, or areas already irradiated in case of recurrent tumors.
  • Image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT):
An advanced imaging technology to improve the accuracy of treatment and allow for a better definition of the tumor. Four-dimensional (4D) CT scans deliver more accurate treatment for moving tumors, in relation to the unconscious movement of the chest, abdomen, and surrounding organs (breathing, intestinal peristalsis, pulsations).
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery and Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SRS/SBRT):
Allows to deliver high-dose irradiation centered on the tumor with millimeter precision, thus sparing surrounding healthy organs, limiting the number of sessions, and reducing both potential side effects and length of treatment.
